HOW SAFE IS YOUR CARBON REPAIR?

Pic 1 shows a failure of a repair recently sent into CBR to review and repair.   Pic 2 shows the epoxy carbon compound that has come away from the bush. Pic 3 shows the newly repaired bush with carbon weave pre – touchup

The point to make here is that carbon is not magic material, nor is resin. Carbon is only strong when the hairs lay in a collected pattern as shown Pic 3. Mixing carbon pieces into a paste with epoxy is not going to have the desired effect. In some cases it is weaker then epoxy on its own, which in itself is no good. The strength is in the ‘frozen’ weave!

Of course there is more to it but this will suffice in understanding the limitations of carbon out of context.

HOW STRONG IS A CARBON REPAIR?

We often get asked how strong or how safe is a carbon repair. At last we have an example I can share with you of a repeat break. Same bike, identical bunch sprint clash a year later. Except this time the impact could not re-fracture the repair. Instead it cracked just below the edge of the repair as you can see in the pictures. This is what we like to see.
